I did not know Maureen well, but what was always apparent to me about her was that she was smart, pretty and good.  Despite the fact that I did not know her well, I have a wonderful memory of her that I have carried with me all these years.

The incident that I speak of took place during last period in the cafeteria, Study Hall.  Most of us were just killing time waiting for the buses to come.  Not studying like we were supposed to.  At one table was a group of older, rough looking boys..  At the table next to them was a lone younger boy.  The group of rough boys were heckling, bullying and insulting the lone boy.  He had his head hanging down, doing his best to ignore them and I am sure praying that the buses would come soon.

All of a sudden from across the room marched petite Maureen ( what was she 5'3"' 100 lbs?). She walked right up to that table of rough boys and with her hands on her hips said "STOP THAT!!!  Stop that right now!".  The entire cafeteria of people went silent and every eye in the room was on those bully's. They all turned bright red and hung their heads in shame.  Then Maureen calmly walked back to her table and sat down.  I have never forgotten her bravery.  I wished that I had applauded.  Susan Kilburn
